For filmmakers, broadcasters, archives & rights holders

Legacy footage, production-ready.

We transfer legacy video and tape to broadcast- and edit-ready files — ProRes masters, review proxies, and optional restoration — from the Alberta studio behind Alchemy Imageworks and Alchemy FX.
  • Edit-ready deliverables

ProRes masters and H.264 proxies that drop straight into your timeline.

  • Format breadth

Consumer to prosumer legacy formats — and pro formats where supported — captured in-house.

  • Restoration on tap

Color, cleanup and AI upscaling through Alchemy FX when footage needs more than a transfer.

  • Handled in Alberta

Your masters stay in-province, under one roof, start to finish.

  • Confidential by default

Tracked intake and careful handling for sensitive and rights-controlled material.

Built for people who work in footage

  • Filmmakers and documentary producers digitizing archival sources and past projects.
  • Broadcasters and production companies pulling legacy footage back into rotation.
  • Photographers and videographers with client or personal archives on tape.
  • Musicians, artists and estates preserving performance and tour footage.
  • Museums, archives, historical societies and institutions safeguarding collections.
  • Brands and organizations reclaiming media libraries for reuse.

Formats we capture

VHS · S-VHS · VHS-C · Hi8 · Video8 · Digital8 · MiniDV · HDV

Working with an unusual or professional format? Ask us. If we can’t capture it in-house, we’ll point you to someone who can.

Delivered as ProRes 422 / 422 HQ masters, H.264 / H.265 proxies, or the codec your pipeline needs.

Deliverables built for post

Master + proxy — A high-quality archival master to keep, plus a lightweight proxy for review and editing.

Your codec, your wrapper — ProRes or H.264 / H.265 as standard; DNxHR and other codecs on request.

Clean capture — Full-frame capture with audio kept in sync and interlacing handled properly.

Organized & logged — Consistent file naming, per-tape logs and metadata — a searchable archive, not a pile of clip001 files.

Delivered how you work — On SSD, drive or secure download, sized to your project.

How it works

A workflow built around your delivery date

From project scope to final delivery, every tape is logged, captured, checked, and prepared for the format or pipeline you need.

Step 01
Scope & quote

Tell us your formats, tape count and the deliverables you need. We quote the project and a timeline.

Step 02
Secure intake

Hand off your tapes locally or by arrangement. Everything is logged in and tracked.

Step 03
Capture & QC

We transfer in-house, check every file, and prepare your masters and proxies.

Step 04
Deliver

Files on the media or pipeline you specify, with logs — and straight into restoration through Alchemy FX if you need it.

More than a transfer

Digitizing is step one. Because Alchemy Archive is part of the same studio as Alchemy FX, your footage can move straight from capture into color correction, cleanup, stabilization and AI upscaling to HD or 4K — without changing vendors or shipping masters anywhere. Old SD footage you’d written off can come back sharp enough for the edit.

Project-based pricing

Professional transfers vary too much for a flat rate — formats, volume, deliverable specs and restoration all factor in. Tell us what you’ve got and we’ll quote it. Volume and ongoing-archive rates are available.

Optional project rates

  • Professional transfer, per tape (master + proxy): from $54.99/tape
  • Pro / rare formats (Betacam, U-matic, etc.): quoted per project
  • Restoration, color & upscaling: quoted via Alchemy FX
  • Rush / deadline work: available

From a studio that lives in post

We’re not a drop-off kiosk. Alchemy Imageworks and Alchemy FX work in production and post every day, so your footage is handled by people who understand timelines, deliverables and how an archive actually gets used. It’s all done in Alberta — your masters never have to leave the province or sit in a cross-border shipping queue.

Why teams trust us with their archives

  • In-province handling — Your tapes or masters stay in Alberta. They are not mailed out of province or sent to a third-party transfer house. This matters because old tapes can be fragile, irreplaceable, or sensitive.
  • Post under one roof — The same studio can handle transfer, restoration, cleanup, upscaling, and editing. The client does not need one company for digitizing, another for restoration, and another for post-production.
  • Confidential & logged — The tapes are tracked when they come in, handled carefully, and documented. This is important for sensitive footage, unreleased material, archived media, rights-controlled content, or client-owned production assets.
  • Real production context — The service is handled by people who understand film, media, timelines, deliverables, formats, proxies, masters, and how footage will actually be used in editing or archiving.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What formats do you transfer?

VHS, S-VHS, VHS-C, Hi8, Video8, Digital8, MiniDV and HDV. We work with North American (NTSC) tapes; we don’t currently transfer PAL or SECAM tapes from overseas.

Do my tapes ever leave the Tri-Region?

No. Every tape is digitized in-house at our own workstations and stays local from drop-off to pickup. We never outsource or ship your tapes out of province.

How long will it take?

Most orders are ready within about 2-5 business days. Because we can digitize many tapes at once, even large collections move quickly — we’ll give you a timeline when you drop off.

How do I get my digital files?

Two ways. You’ll get a private download link the day your order is ready so you can watch and share right away — and you can take your files home on SSD, USB or DVD as a copy to keep.

What if a tape is damaged?

We inspect every tape first and can often work with minor issues. If a tape needs repair or we can’t safely transfer it, we’ll contact you before doing anything — no surprise charges.

What will the files play on?

Your videos are delivered as MP4 files, which play on virtually any phone, tablet, computer or smart TV.

How much does it cost?

$54.99 per tape for up to two hours, plus $25 for each additional hour. We offer discounts on larger collections. See the pricing above.

How do I pay?

We accept e-transfer, debit, credit. Payment is due when you pick up your finished order.

Can businesses get a bulk rate?

Yes. We handle bulk collections for organizations and can store and manage the files through Alchemy I.T. Get in touch for a quote.

Attachments & More

Heavy-Duty Meets High-Impact Design

When Attachments & More approached us to rebuild their online presence, we knew it was time to bring bold energy to an industry that often plays it safe online. Led by dedicated owners Darin “Chuck” Holowaychuk and Sharon Holowaychuk, this family-run business specializes in heavy-duty equipment and custom attachments—most notably their growing line of compact loaders and accessories from Avant, one of their premier manufacturers.

Our goal? Deliver a visually impactful, user-friendly website that not only showcases their equipment lineup and services, but positions Attachments & More as a standout in their market. The final result is a vivid, modern, and technically robust site that captures their brand personality and puts them steps ahead of competitor sites in the heavy equipment and compact loader space.

Beyond the design and development, we also navigated a challenging handoff process from a previous developer and hosting company—helping consolidate logins, assets, and systems under one roof for greater control, security, and ease of management for their team.

From the clean navigation and intuitive equipment browsing to the dynamic visual layout that champions their Avant partnership, this build was all about bringing clarity and authority to their online voice—while ensuring the backend runs just as smoothly as the frontend looks.

Today, we’re proud to provide secure hosting, ongoing site maintenance, and continued digital support for the Attachments & More team.

We’re even prouder to have worked alongside such dedicated business owners who care deeply about quality, relationships, and doing things right.

Shield Fire Protection

Working with Shield Fire Protection was a truly rewarding experience. From day one, owner Bill Hansen and Service & Inspection Manager Dan Litrop brought a clear, focused vision to the table. They knew exactly what their website needed to accomplish: communicate professionalism, reinforce trust, and reflect the technical expertise that defines their fire protection services across Alberta.

At Alchemy Imageworks, our role was to translate that vision into a modern, high-performance website that not only looked exceptional but also supported Shield’s credibility and operational goals. We developed a clean, structured, and fully responsive website that showcases their services with clarity, authority, and immediate accessibility. Every component — from page layout and navigation to copy structure and visual hierarchy — was crafted to support both user trust and business growth.

Beyond the build itself, we now provide secure web hosting and ongoing site maintenance, ensuring the Shield Fire Protection website remains protected, fast, stable, and up-to-date year-round. With cyberthreats evolving and online expectations rising, maintaining their digital foundation with enterprise-grade hosting, proactive updates, real-time monitoring, and regular security hardening is essential. Bill and Dan can stay focused on their clients, knowing their online presence is fully managed behind the scenes.

Working with Shield Fire Protection was a win from start to finish — collaborative, efficient, and driven by a shared commitment to quality. We’re proud to support their brand with a website that reflects the strength and reliability of the services they provide throughout Alberta.
